THE STATISTICS do not make inspiring reading for recent graduates: latest CSO figures indicate that 62,400 graduates are unemployed; an average of 110 Irish nationals are emigrating every day; and a report by the National Economic and Social Council predicts that there may be no net increase in jobs here until 2013.

Volunteer organizations seeing increase in applicant pool

When James Foster graduated from Penn State in 1994, he had no idea that teaching English abroad existed as a career. He was on a date with a woman who was leaving the next day to teach English overseas when he found out it could be a possibility.
Fast-forward 15 years and Foster is now the director of the TEFL Academy, a program based in Chile offering courses and certifications in teaching English.
College graduates are no longer finding themselves in Foster’s predicament. In the past year, his program has seen an increasing enrollment of recent college graduates.
